Job Description


A Behavioral Health Intake Counselor is needed for the Psych Inpatient Management Department.  It is 40 hours/week working day shift and is eligible for State benefits.

Three (3) years of experience in health care.

Responsible for assisting in the process of responding to referrals and other requests for services and information. Provides technical assistance to the referrals process and ensures compliance with regulatory standards.

1. Communicates with staff regarding pending admissions, medical issues that may impact admission and payer approval/insurance authorization.
2. Maintains all databases to provide a variety of regulatory and internal operations reports. Works directly with the medical director and financial coordinator to develop a database that will be able to compile a variety of reports pertaining to referrals, insurance status (authorizations, denials, etc).
3. Markets the program and its services to potential referral sources and potential patients.
4. May lead or co-lead patient groups when appropriate.
5. Obtains documents and evaluates vital signs including height, weight and orthostatic vital signs before every outpatient evaluation and admission either to inpatient or PHP level of care, is responsible for determining vital sign concerns and bringing them to the attention of the proper staff.
6. Provides insurance information to financial coordinator for verification of benefits. Obtains initial insurance authorization for both inpatient and partial hospitalization levels of care when patients are entering from outpatient. Communicates with CCM regarding insurance authorization.
7. Receives referrals and gathers medical and psychiatric documentation for decision for level of care. Provides potential patients, their families and referral providers with information about the program, different levels of care, the evaluation and admission process and alternative placements. Communicates with potential patients, their families and referral providers throughout the referral process in terms of decisions regarding treatment in the program.

Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● No licensure or certification required.
Professional Experience Requirements:
● Three (3) years of experience in health care.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
● Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and staff. Ability to work with, express sensitivity and understanding, and secure the cooperation of patients, including maintaining empathetic attitude towards patients. Ability to keep calm in stressful situations. Must be fluent in verbal and written English language.
