The System Executive Director –Pharmacy Business Operations position manages a system-wide comprehensive pharmacy program and is responsible for achieving strategic and operating objectives of the pharmacy service line consistent with the strategic goals, mission and values of UNC Health. This position is responsible for the overall management and growth of pharmacy business operations across designated system entities. The System Executive Director - Pharmacy Business Operations anticipates and recognizes the evolving factors that affect current/future needs, and directs the development of strategies to support future growth of pharmacy services..


1.Pharmacy Business Operations- Provides strategic system leadership and direct oversight for the Pharmacy Business Office, Pharmacy Human Resources, and Pharmacy Auditing services. Works collaboratively with leadership to create an infrastructure comprised of highly reliable operational support services. Cultivates and maintains professional relationships with primary customers. Ensures effective and efficient delivery, communication, and administration of the service line. Responsible for the following programmatic initiatives and all other duties as assigned:

Finance, Budget and Accounting

  • Budgeting and Financial Reporting oversight for designated owned/managed entity pharmacies and pharmacy shared services departments. Includes annual budgeting process for pharmacy revenue, drug, salary, and other operating expenses. Oversees monthly financial and productivity reporting for several HCS entities and pharmacy shared services departments
  • Financial assessments for special projects, such as Epic EMR conversions and new UNCHCS entity financial reviews
  • Oversight of monthly accounting close process and non-drug capital and minor equipment purchasing
  • Team oversight for pharmacy inventory, auditing, and final financial reporting
Pharmacy Revenue
  • Oversight of Pharmacy Retail Reconciliation team, assuring contract compliance; collection and monthly reporting of expected payer and patient revenue; operation of small patient-oriented call center focused on retail pharmacy collections; review of acute care and infusion revenue and volume billing compliance work queues
Non-Drug Contracting
  • Negotiates and creates UNC Health contractual arrangements for non-drug supplies and services in partnership with UNC Health Purchasing
Human Resources Support
  • Programmatically responsible for the implementation and maintenance of:
  • Pharmacy-related job descriptions and pharmacy specific HR policies
  • Pharmacy recruitment and retention efforts
  • Review of pharmacy candidate offers supporting participating entities
  • Compliance with regulatory agencies for licensure and training requirements
  • Collaboration with Human Resources to review and interpret salary and market results
  • Support for pharmacy leaders related to communication and interpretation of Human Resources policies, requirements, and deadlines
Pharmacy Audit and Compliance
  • Oversight of pharmacy internal audit and compliance for Specialty Retail Pharmacy, with planned growth into other pharmacy operational areas
Space and Construction
  • Lead major space and construction initiatives spanning requests for new building needs and office space management

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy required. Master’s degree in Pharmacy, Health Services, Business Administration, or related field is strongly preferred.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
  • Eligible for licensure as a Registered Pharmacist in NC. Licensure from NC Board of Pharmacy required within 6 months of orientation date or sooner if required for operations.
Professional Experience Requirements:
  • Ten years of pharmacist experience or equivalent, of which seven years must be management experience in pharmacy; proven management skills, including program planning and development, project management, finance, performance, quality and/or human resource management.
  • Prior leadership in Pharmacy budgeting/financial reporting, and in human resources programs is preferred.
