The Senior Cytogenetic Technologist processes clinical specimens from patients who are referred for cancer or constitutional cytogenetic diagnosis. The processing will include accessioning the specimens into the laboratory, tissue culture, harvesting or preparing the cells for analysis, slide preparation and staining, microscope analysis, imaging, cell karyotyping and preparation of diagnostic result reports. Fluorescence in situ hybridization and chromosome microarray testing is also performed.
Responsibilities:
Investigates problems with equipment, test results, specimens, and/or workflow.
Monitors daily operation of laboratory section or work area.
Participates on teams or performs special projects/assignments.
Reports results to healthcare providers.
Consults/confers with healthcare providers regarding test results.
Reviews test results to ensure accuracy of report and timely correction of errors.
Serves as Lead Technologist or Program Manager within technical area of the Cytogenetics Laboratory. May also serve as lead in quality control, education, competency, equipment, safety, etc.
Trains new employees.
Teaches Clinical Laboratory Science students, Pathology residents and a variety of other learners.
Serves as a technical resource. Performs quality control, new assay validation and equipment maintenance in the Cytogenetics laboratory.
Performs cytogenetics testing procedures: cell culture and processing, FISH, microarray and/or microscopic analysis.
Observes test performance and trends, collects and presents data.
Reviews and maintains standard operating procedures.

● Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, Biological science
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● CG (ASCP) Board of Certification required
Professional Experience Requirements:
● Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or a chemistry or biological science and completion of a NACCLS accredited Cytogenetics program or completion of a Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Genetic Sciences, CG (ASCP) Board of Certification required, two (2) years of experience required.
● Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or a chemistry or biological science, CG (ASCP) Board of Certification required, three (3) years of experience required.
