The UNC Division of Oncology is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to join the Gastrointestinal Oncology team. This APP will work with an interdisciplinary team to evaluate and provide medical management of gastrointestinal oncology patients at UNC Hospitals and Hillsborough Medical Center. This provider will promote a collaborative relationship with medical staff, professional nurses, and administrative staff to ensure the continuity of patient care.
The general responsibilities of this position include providing supportive management throughout the continuum of patient care during chemotherapy, including those on clinical trials, as well as surveillance after completion of treatment. The APP will function as an independent provider and also in conjunction with the physician in a parallel clinic.
Additional duties include: Perform history and physical assessments of gastrointestinal oncology patients. Order appropriate diagnostic studies and correctly interpret results. Develop, implement and evaluate plan of care in collaboration with MD. Respond to patient inquiries and manage acute and chronic problems. Manage chemotherapy/biotherapy and related toxicities.
Following a period of training, the APP will review and verify chemotherapy orders for patients receiving infusions and supporting the nursing staff, per UNC Policy. Work in collaboration with other providers and ancillary staff. Document all care in the Electronic Medical Record. As skills evolve, participate in Quality Improvement Projects. Participate in practice-based learning and improvement sessions monthly for six months and then every six months with the physician supervisor.
The APP will receive formal on-boarding and continued practice assessments to learn, maintain, and continuously improve skills that are necessary for the job. The APP Lead will serve as a preceptor and an APP mentor.
● Completion of an accredited graduate-level Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) program.
● Licensed as an Advanced Practice Provider (i.e., Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, Certified Nurse Midwife) in the state of North Carolina. Board certification if required by the Department.

Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
● Demonstrated clinical competency. Effective leadership skills. Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively. Demonstrated written and verbal communication and strong analytical skills. Effective interaction to ensure the successful care of patients in the clinical setting. Documentation in the medical record to substantiate accurate billing.
