Position Summary

The Associate Dean for Information Technology is a highly visible executive-level role that serves as the School of Medicine’s Chief Information Officer supporting 27 academic departments and 18 centers encompassing approximately 6,500 employees. This position is responsible for technology strategy, direction and investment for the SOM. The position incumbent reports to the Associate Dean for Administration of the SOM. The position is also responsible for maintaining the technology infrastructure and business systems and ensures the School provides high quality, best practice systems and support to enhance its teaching and learning and research missions, as well as faculty in their academic-related clinical work, while ensuring reliable operational effectiveness and efficiency. This position provides executive leadership for SOM technology group(s) that provides academic technology services; application, web, and data services; client services and support; information security; infrastructure and operations; and project management for the School. 

The Associate Dean and CIO will be an effective strategist and advocate to assure that the School utilizes technology resources best practices at all levels of the organization. The position coordinates technology policy and planning and the management of technology systems in the instructional, research and administrative functions of the School. The CIO works closely with SOM leadership on technology strategies that (a) enhances the teaching and learning process both in the classroom and clinical setting; and (b) strengthens and supports School research. The position is a member of a senior administrative leadership team that includes human resources, finance, planning, professional service contracting, academic and business operations, and communications.

Education Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with three years or greater of related professional experience; for candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and five years or greater of relevant experience in substitution.

Qualifications and Experience

Strong managerial capabilities spanning planning, budgetary and personnel management. Experience in planning and successfully executing budgetary development in an information systems environment is required. Experience managing in complex, matrix management environments. A record of unquestioned integrity.

At least 10 years of experience in information technology leadership, preferably in an academic medical center with research computing/technologies or other health professions school. Strong managerial capabilities spanning planning, budgetary and personnel management. Experience in planning and successfully executing budgetary development in an information systems environment is required. Understanding of and experience with federal regulatory security requirements in a healthcare and research settings. Demonstrated collegial and collaborative leadership and interpersonal style and skills. Experience managing in complex, matrix management environments. Experience leading broad organizational transformation. Demonstrated conflict resolution skills. A record of unquestioned integrity.

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
