Position Summary 

The University of North Carolina School of Medicine seeks an innovative, collaborative leader to serve as the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Students Education (SAD). Reporting to the Vice Dean of Academic Affairs, the SAD oversees all activities of the Office of Medical Education whose mission it is to train students to become highly competent and caring physicians. The SAD leads change in the medical student education program, continuously seeking to improve the status quo and promoting system changes that support ongoing innovation in medical education. The SAD provides leadership to foster a culture of collegiality and collaboration among faculty, staff, and students and works closely with leaders in the School of Medicine and Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion. 

This role requires a skilled and knowledgeable educator and leader with in-depth knowledge of medical education and experience leading educational efforts. A deep understanding of curricular development and assessment, student support innovations, educational technology resources, and organizational change management is critical. The SAD works with the Senior Director of Medical Student Education to advance quality, innovation, and transformation across the medical education program. Key Duties include but are not limited to: 

* Provide strategic direction for Medical Student Education Program, building relationships with educational leaders, institutional leaders, students, and other constituents. 

* Oversee the budget of the Office of Medical Education to maintain a high functioning medical student education program 

* Prioritize and champion curriculum reforms around diversity, equity and inclusion in medical education that will enhance the teaching and training of medical students 

* Supervise and work with the Associate Dean of Curriculum to guide curricular quality and innovation, ensuring a comparable and high-quality educational experience across all campuses. 

* Supervise and work with the Associate Dean of Student Affairs to foster an inclusive learning environment and guide quality student support programming. 

* Supervise and work with the Associate Dean of Admissions to recruit a diverse class that will serve the needs of North Carolina and the nation. 

* Assist with other core functions including policy making, accreditation, fund raising, and scholarship. 

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements 

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities related to teaching, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. In addition, the position minimums should satisfy any accreditation requirements in the specified area of instruction. 

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience 


* MD or DO (or other terminal degree) with demonstrated experience and qualifications to practice clinical medicine 

* Eligible for a North Carolina license and ability to obtain clinical privileges at UNC. 

* The chosen candidate must have the credentials to qualify for appointment on the faculty of one of the departments of the School of Medicine. 

* Record of successful administrative experience in an academic medical center at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor * Educational leadership experience within a complex medical school setting.

* Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion 

* Effective communication, collaboration, and interprofessional skills 

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience 

The ideal candidate will have had experience in a peer institution academic health center. The SAD must possess outstanding leadership, interpersonal and communication skills. The candidate should have the capacity to inspire confidence in decision-making and be able to manage change. The candidate should exhibit peer recognition in appropriate professional organizations and have experience with the accreditation processess.
