Job Summary: 

The Chief Nursing Officer is accountable for all aspects of Nursing Services to include responsibility for the provision of care to all patients admitted to Onslow Memorial Hospital. The Chief Nursing Officer executes leadership and professional work in planning, budgeting, organizing, and supervising activities in the Nursing division; establishes policies, procedures, standards, and objectives for the provision of services; and strives to improve organizational performance through continuous assessment and evaluation. 

Job Responsibilities:

• Supports and promotes safe, efficient, and patient centered nursing care. 
• Manages staff to effectively educate, train, evaluate, motivate, delegate and monitor their performance. 
• Displays expertise in industry trends and best practices in clinical methodologies and nursing practices. 
• Elevates the standards for nursing performance and achieving improved clinical outcomes. 
• Exceeds performance targets in quality, patient safety, and patient experience. 
• Surpasses goals and seizing opportunities to improve patient care. 
• Ensures regulatory and organizational compliance in an ethical workplace. 
• Demonstrates effective time management, prioritization, ability to manage multiple projects and meets identified deadlines. 
• Promotes trusts and employee engagement through effective and timely communication strategies by identifying and engaging with all relevant stakeholders to shape consensus. 
• Performs executive on call duties on a rotational basis in support of the CEO. 

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• Maintains education and credentials.
• Effectively and consistently implements all levels of rounding as appropriate to the department. 
• Actively participates in and takes initiative to build lasting relationships and collaborations with senior leadership team members, physicians, and key stakeholders in a complex and highly matrixed organization. 
• Operationally and fiscally manages the division through successful development and management of annual budgets to include operations and capital. 
• Incorporates evidence-based standards into decisions for the provision of safe patient care. 
• Coordinates, facilitates, and manages change within the division. 
• Uses effective conflict resolution techniques. 
• Uses project management principals. 
• Assesses and responds appropriately to organizational culture. 

Qualifications

Education: 

Graduation from an accredited school with a Bachelors and Master’s degree required; one degree must be in nursing. 

Experience: 

10+ years of increasingly responsible nursing or other leadership roles with significant operational experience (e.g., CNO, associate CNO, VP of Operations, other executive leader). Experience functioning both as a member and as a leader of a multi-disciplinary team in tackling issues of quality, patient safety, patient satisfaction, and resource allocation. Profound ability to develop and implement organization-wide patient care programs, policies and procedures that describe how patient’s nursing care needs are assessed, evaluated and met. Financial and Business Acumen demonstrated by the successful development and management of annual budgets reflecting staffing, capital and other operating expenses. 

Licenses, Certifications, and/or Registrations: 

Current, unencumbered North Carolina or compact state RN license. Certification in professional organization, such as AONE or ACHE. 

Specialized Knowledge/Skills: 

Excellent leadership, decision-making, and communication skills essential. Knowledge of current patient care delivery strategies, evidence based practice and quality improvement concepts required.
