Job Description

Provides customer services and schedule services and performs phlebotomy within the UNC Rex Laboratory departments.

Professional Experience Requirements:
●If high school diploma, one (1) year of phlebotomy experience required
●If graduation from a phlebotomy program, no previous experience is required.


1.0 Maintains an environment of safety for patients, self and others. 

1.1 Appropriate PPE is worn at all times. 1.2 PPE that is soiled or damaged is replaced. 1.3 Responsible for maintaining a professional work area throughout the shift. 1.4 Ensures at the end of the shift that supplies are restocked, bench tops and any soiled areas are cleaned. 

2.0 Performs, analyzes, and results waived medical laboratory tests procedures according to established protocols. 

2.1 Operates departmental equipment according to standard operating procedures. 2.2 Results test within the established turnaround times determined by standard operating procedures and policies. 

3.0 Maintains and reports accurate test results using documented communication channels. 

3.1 Reviews pending logs at the throughout the shift and is accountable for all specimens, following up on any discrepancies. 3.2 Notifies doctor, nurse or office staff if testing will be delayed or cancelled. 3.3 Consistently reports errors in the Laboratory CQI database. 3.4 Answers telephone and provide information to optimize laboratory communication.

4.0 Processes clinical specimens according to established departmental procedure. 

4.1 Ensures that specimens requiring additional testing are distributed to the appropriate area. 4.2 Coordinates specimens and requisitions for reference laboratory testing 4.3 Prepare and take STAT specimens to appropriate laboratory for processing. 

5.0 Handles Outreach specimens according to stand operating procedure. 5.1 Prepares samples for courier transport. 5.2 Sorts courier drop offs and documents on received log. 5.3 Accurately labels specimens according to standard operating procedures. 5.4 Follows proper protocol to ensure the integrity of all laboratory specimens. 

6.0 Performs and documents quality control on assigned laboratory equipment to ensure accurate test performance. 

6.1 Ensures quality control is current and documented before beginning an assay. 

7.0 Performs preventive maintenance and basic troubleshooting on assigned laboratory equipment as required.

7.1 Troubleshoots instruments/equipment and requests service calls if necessary. 7.2 Communicate instrument/equipment issues with tech or designee. 7.3 Ensures QC is completed and acceptable before beginning an assay. 7.4 Ensures that instrument/equipment is functioning properly and within standard operating protocols. 

8.0 Maintains departmental supplies and inventory. 

8.1 Inventories, stocks and rotates supplies. 8.2 Prepares solutions, reagents and stains following documented laboratory procedures. 8.3 Alerts appropriate staff of inventory concerns. 8.4 Uses reagents with shorter expiration dates before those with longer expiration dates. 8.5 Ensures samples and reagents are stored in the appropriate location and are discarded at the proper intervals. 

9.0 Maintains proficiency in appropriate LIS/IT computer programs. 

9.1 Operates the computer system utilizing routine programs to receive specimens and to retrieve and print laboratory data. 9.2 Demonstrates proper handling of add-on testing orders. 

10.0 Responsible for training, education and required reading. 

10.1 Assist in training and education of new and fellow employees. 10.2 Responsible for reading procedures during training and subsequent revisions. 10.3 Must document review of revised and new standard operating procedures prior to the approval date. 10.4 Responsible for review and acknowledgement of mandatory policies, job description and completion of annual safety training within the time frames established by the organization. 10.5 Maintains two (2) hours of continuing education per year according to policy. 10.6 Complete competency materials within established time period. 

11.0 Function in a manner that allows them to be deemed trustworthy and reliable. 

12.0 Performs specimen collection by venipuncture as necessary following documented policies and procedures 

12.1 Verifies specimen requirements and appropriate collection procedures prior to specimen collection. 12.2 Maintains positive specimen identification throughout the specimen collection process. 12.3 Legibly handwriting date, time and collector ID on all specimens collected. 12.4 Perform venipunctures as requested in all areas of clinic and other designated units if necessary. 

13.0 Communicates with appropriate lab, clinic, and office staff 

13.1 Communicate with front desk staff and MA’s with regard to patient scheduling 13.2 Communicate patient needs/concerns to appropriate care provider (RN, NP, PA, MD). 13.3 Notify designated RN if port-a-cath access for blood draw is requested by patient. 13.4 Assist physicians in retrieval of laboratory data/documents 

14.0 Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to covering staffing need needs at other HONC locations.

Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Phlebotomy certificate strongly preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements: Phlebotomy and patient care experience is required.
