Job Description

This is an entry level position for a medical assistant apprentice who is enrolled in the UNC Health Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program (MAAP), and who has not yet completed the program or taken a MA credentialing exam. The medical assistant apprentice is learning to provide routine clinical and administrative support to providers and other health care team members in an outpatient clinic setting. Employed under the MAAP program guide that includes 144 hours of on-line didactic and 2000 hours of on-the-job training. The MA Apprentice must successfully progress through the three tollgates (Administrative Apprentice I, Basic Clinical Apprentice II, and Intermediate Clinical Apprentice II I) and complete all competencies associated with the MAAP.
Works under the supervision of the assigned journeymen, and under the general direction of the designated manager/supervisor. The UNC Health MAAP is a training program approved by Appreticenship NC.

Administrative Apprentice I (0-3 months / 90 days)
Administrative activities include but are not limited to:
1. Assists with front desk reception and daily clinic operation including patient registration, check in/check out, appointment scheduling, and scheduling of tests and treatments.
2. Answers clinic telephone and assists in-basket under the direction of a provider or nurse.
3. Assist to manage electronic and paper medical records, understand ICD-10-CM coding guidelines, billing and reimbursement, and basic office finance.
4. Learn medical terminology, healthcare laws and ethics, MA scope of practice, and develop professional communication and customer service skills.
5. Learns basic anatomy and physiology and associated diseases, emergency management, and infection control in the clinic setting.

Basic Clinical Apprentice II (3 – 6 months must compelte tollgate in order receive wage increase after completing Basic Clinical Apprentice II.)
Basic clinical apprentice includes general patient care activities but are not limited to:
1. With assistance, performs rooming and/or intake process, collects patient data including vital signs, height, weight, and information related to patient’s reason for visit. Documents patient care in EHR.
2. With spervision, collects patient and family data, including medical and social history. Reviews patient’s current medication list, allergies and preferred pharmacy.
3. Collects specimen for a variety of lab tests following the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendmends (CLIA). Performs additional patient test to include vision, hearing, pulmonary function and allergy.
4. Participates with providers in coordinating care and reinforces patient education. Reviews the patient record to determine whether patient requires any routine health screenings.
5. Ensures exam/procedure room contains appropriate supplies, equipment, forms and educational materials are available and ready for use during visit/procedure. Learns to prepare, clean, stock and maintain exam and treatment rooms. Cleans and sterilizes instruments.
6. With supervison, assists provider with aseptic and sterile procedures and/or treatments. Provides patient with after-visit, follow-up, self-care or procedural instructions and/or educational materials as directed.

Intermediate Clinical Apprentice III (6 months – 14 months)
Intermediate clinical apprentice includes advanced patient care activities but are not limited to:
1. Under direct supervision, performs phlebotomy and blood specimen collection.
2. Assist staff to perform cardiac monitoring tests such as EKG and stress test.
3. Identifies basic pharmacology to include pharmacokinetics, drug classifications, and the rules of medication administration. With supervision, demonstrates medication administration using all routes. Demonstrates proper medication management, disposal, and equipement use. Documents medication administration in EPIC.

Completion Requirements:
Must complete:
1. The 144 hours didactic portion of the program with a minimum score of 70%. 
2. The 2000 hours of on-the-job training within 14 months.
3. Apprentice must successfully progress through the MAAP by completing all didactic and training competencies included in the three tollgates: Administrative Apprentice I, Basic Clinical Apprentice II, and Intermediate Clinical Apprentice III. 
4. Successfully obtain Medical Assistant credential within two months of completing MAAP. 
·Note: Completion of the MAAP allows the apprentice to take the National HealthCareer Association credentialing exam and obtain CCMA, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant.
·Other medical assistant credentialing bodies are also accepted: American Association of Medical Assistants (CMA); American Medical Technologist (RMA); National Center for Competency Testing (NCMA), American Medical Certification Association (CMAC).

Education Requirements:
● High school diploma or general education degree.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Must successfully complete Basic Life Support Certification from American Heart Association during apprenticeship training.
● Must complete credentialing requirements for the Credentialed Medical Assistant within two month of completing the apprenticeship program.
● Sign a retention offer outlining the expectations and criteria of the program.
Professional Experience Requirements:
● Personal sitter, C N A credential, Introduction to medical assistant certificate or other clinical experience preferred.

Ability to perform the essential functions of the position as outlined above.
Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated ability to engage positively with patients and families and to work as a team with staff and providers.
Ability to use a computer to document required information into the electronic medical record
